Both carry weight and responsibility. The problem is how often either is claimed without accountability, or borrowed to legitimise work that doesn’t meet cultural or ethical standards. We’ve seen growing confusion and exploitation of these forms of authority. Identity has become a credential, often separated from the obligations and accountability that should accompany it. Institutions are using cultural association to legitimise activity, particularly where funding and procurement incentives apply. Across the sector, we’re seeing the language of identity and representation grow louder while responsibility and obligation fall quiet. Cultural legitimacy is responsibility. It is demonstrated through integrity, accountability, and service to community.
